What “downed tree” actually means
Storm-felled, disease-felled, naturally downed, and why the difference matters more than any certification label.

Vior Woodworks — made to order
Handcrafted from downed trees and locally sourced timber. Pieces made to become part of your home.
Every piece starts as a single tree, read before the first cut.
A single live-edge slab on sculpted walnut supports — the room's anchor.
A solid-timber bench pulls up beside the table, grain running with it.
A plinth sideboard and wall rails turn storage into architecture.
In the next bay, two waterfall tables fold the same tree over the edge.
Everything on the floor is made to order in your species and finish.
Everything on this floor is in the collection — or made to order in your species, dimensions, and finish.
From fallen trees to heirloom furniture, every piece we sell carries the story of the tree it came from and the hands that shaped it.
When a tree falls in the Sierra Nevada foothills, it doesn't go to waste. If it's not from a downed tree, it's from an ethical local sawmill. No clearcuts. No mass production. Just honest materials and skilled hands.
Four collections, one rule: if it isn't wood, we don't sell it. Every piece is made by an independent woodsmith we can name.
From a fallen tree in the Sierra Nevada foothills to a finished piece in your home, this is the path every Vior Woodworks piece travels, told in seven steps.
Chapter 01 of 07
When a tree falls in the Sierra Nevada foothills, we work with arborists and landowners to reclaim it before it becomes mulch or firewood.
Storm-felled · disease-felled · naturally downed
Logs are milled so the grain of each board tells one continuous story, then air-dried and kiln-finished to a stable moisture content.
Flitch-cut · 8, 10% final moisture
Before the first cut, the woodsmith decides what the board wants to be. Live edges stay. Figure is placed where the eye lands.
No two pieces alike
Mortise and tenon, dovetails, wedged joints, mechanical connections first, adhesive second. Joints you could take apart with a mallet.
Built to be taken apart
Edges are softened by hand and facets left where a carve should read as a carve. Machines rough it out; hands finish it.
Hand-shaped edges
Hardwax oils that protect without plasticising the surface. The finish wears in, not off, and can be refreshed without stripping the piece.
Plant-based oils · food-safe where it matters
Every piece leaves with the maker's name, the tree's origin, and the story of both. You'll know exactly what you're living with.

Our timber
Most of what we build starts as a downed tree within a day's drive of the shop: white oak, black walnut, maple, cherry, and ash from the Sierra Nevada foothills up through the Willamette Valley. What we can't reclaim, we buy from ethical sawmills along the same corridor.
Custom work opens the whole map. Explore endless wood species options for your custom orders beyond the selections shown on the site, including figured slabs like goby walnut and outdoor species like cedar.

For Woodsmiths
Are you an independent woodsmith looking to reach more customers? We provide the showroom, the marketing, and the sales infrastructure. You focus on what you do best, making beautiful furniture.
We don't buy your pieces outright. We consign them, giving you fair value while we handle display, customer relations, and delivery. It's a partnership built on respect for your craft.
Currently inviting independent woodsmiths to join as founding members: Sierra Nevada foothills, Northern California, and Oregon.
